Get Up and Run

Get Up And Run opens with the Pretenders-styled groove of "Sticking to My Story”, then proceeds to the grandiose chorus of “Saving Grace,” and the acoustic political undertones of “Soldier’s Song,” and straight into the roots-rock influenced title track “Get Up and Run,” followed by the countrified rave of “Find Your Faith.” The second half kicks off with Steve McKnight’s Indian-influenced guitar on “Lay Down,” which shows just how good co-writing between an über guitarist and a shoe gazing songwriter can be, especially when it's propelled by the ultra-tight rhythm section of Craig Spendlove and Raymond Esparza. The CD then segues into what many consider to be Steven James’ strongest suit with the melodic balladry of “Demands of the Day.” This track betrays pop influences of classic writers such as Van Morrison and Smokey Robinson. The CD then continues on with the pure pop pleasure of “Had It With You,” and the wonderfully melancholy “Twenty Four Hours Time,” before rocking to a rollicking end with the sarcastic danceable political observations of “Salute,” and the sly personal confessions of “Injured Angel.”

Life Starts Now

Life Starts Now opens with the good-natured sarcasm of “Get A ‘Cause,” then segues into the hauntingly dark observations of “Christina In the Mirror,” a sadly beautiful look back at an old troubled acquaintance. The third track features James in ballad mode, borrowing equally from the Young Rascals and ancient Irish folk melodies for the lovely “Brennon Town.” The fourth track kicks into high gear with one of his most confessional classics, “Snake Oil Salesman.” The CD then sways into the alt country vein with the folksy “Sorry,” followed by “Same Train,” a mellow anthem to the woes of working life. On track seven the sound swerves towards classic grunge with “Place The Blame,” before it goes off into the pure pop bliss of “Crumbing Church,” and “Falling Fast.” The CD closes out with the introspective “If I Didn’t Say,” which features James at his most introspective and melodic. Give it a listen, you won’t be disappointed.
